Kunihiro Matsumura

Kunihiro Matsumura's impressions have never really been about accuracy. Born in 1967 in Tabuse, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and a graduate of Kyushu Sangyo University, he built a career on impersonating figures like Beat Takeshi and the sumo champion Takanohana — but the joke was rarely the resemblance itself. It was what he made those people say. He borrows a voice and then puts his own absurdity inside it, which is a harder trick than mimicry and ages far better. He was also the original host of Susume! Denpa Shonen, the reality-comedy show whose stunts defined a certain era of Japanese television — a format that would almost certainly not survive a modern network's approval process. Watching him throw himself bodily into those segments, you get the sense of a performer with no self-protective instinct whatsoever. Decades on, he's still working, still recognizable, still doing essentially the same thing. That's not stagnation. That's a bit that was built right the first time.
