My Take

Leo Gordon is my favorite kind of contradiction. On screen he was the menacing heavy, typecast as the brute for over four decades, but off screen he was a working screenwriter and novelist with a genuine literary sensibility. I love that tension between the threatening face and the thoughtful pen behind it. He occasionally got to play sympathetic roles and nailed those too, which tells me the range was always there. To me he embodies the underrated Hollywood craftsman who not only inhabited stories but wrote them, quietly defying the narrow box his looks placed him in.
