My Take

Leonid Kravchuk holds a unique place in twentieth-century history as Ukraine's first president, and I find his arc genuinely fascinating. Born in 1934 in the Rivne region and a longtime Soviet apparatchik, he ended up steering Ukraine through its independence in 1991, then signing the agreement that dissolved the Soviet Union. He passed away in 2022, and his death felt heavy given the war engulfing his country. Whatever one makes of his Communist-era past, he navigated an extraordinary pivot from the old system to a sovereign Ukraine. To me he's a reminder of how individual choices shape the map of nations.
