Lita Grey

Lita Grey is too often reduced to being Charlie Chaplin's second wife, and that framing frustrates me. Yes, she appeared in The Kid and The Gold Rush, but what earns my respect is that she later picked up a pen and wrote her own life as an autobiographer. That act of reclaiming the narrative from a towering, controlling figure feels quietly heroic to me. She lived nearly nine decades and clearly had stories worth telling on her own terms. I value people who insist on authoring themselves, and Grey strikes me as exactly that kind of survivor.
