Mai Asada

It would be lazy to introduce Mai Asada only as somebody's sister, so let me start with her own record. Born in Nagoya in July 1988, she trained in ballet before taking up skating at eight or nine, won two gold medals on the ISU Junior Grand Prix series, and finished fourth at both the 2003 and 2004 World Junior Championships. Her senior international debut came at the 2006 Four Continents, where she placed sixth. That is a serious competitive résumé by any measure. What I find most compelling, though, is the second act. She now works as a model and television personality, which means she voluntarily walked away from a world where she was measured by objective scores into one where the criteria are vague, public, and often unkind. Athletes rarely get credit for how much nerve that transition takes. She went through Tokai Gakuen High School and Chukyo University, the classic Nagoya skating pipeline, and then rebuilt her name somewhere else entirely.
