Masafumi Gotoh

Masafumi Gotoh — Gotch to most people — was born December 2, 1976 in Shimada, Shizuoka, and met his future bandmates Kensuke Kita and Takahiro Yamada in a music club at Kanto Gakuin University. Out of that came Asian Kung-Fu Generation, where he is the vocalist, guitarist and principal songwriter. Plenty of college bands form; almost none become load-bearing pillars of a country's rock canon. What holds my interest, though, isn't the band's success so much as what he has done alongside it. He writes prose as well as songs, has built his own media platforms, and speaks publicly about social and political questions in a music industry where staying quiet is by far the safer commercial choice. Japanese pop culture rewards artists who keep their opinions inside the lyrics. Choosing otherwise costs something real, and he has kept choosing it for years. The nickname is casual; the actual body of work is not. His voice and his phrasing are close to the center of what Japanese-language rock sounded like for an entire generation.
