My Take

Masato Harada came to directing from the wrong direction, which is to say the interesting one. He was a critic first — someone who wrote about films, went to America, spent years around the industry from the outside, and only then walked around to the back of the camera. Directors who begin as critics tend to make films that argue with other films. Harada made films that argued with genre itself. Look at the shape of the filmography and there is no straight line in it. Gunhed, a gloriously strange science-fiction picture from 1989. A tense procedural about the 1972 Asama-Sansō siege. Period drama, including a full-scale account of Sekigahara. He won a Blue Ribbon Award for Best Director and, nearly twenty years later, a Mainichi Film Award for Best Screenplay — recognition on both sides of the job, which is rarer than it sounds. International audiences may know his face without knowing his name: he played Omura, the coldly modern industrialist, in The Last Samurai. It is not a large part, and he gives it exactly the unsentimental hardness he brought to his own work. He kept working past seventy, at an age when most directors of his generation had settled into elder-statesman interviews. He died in December 2025, at seventy-six. What I take from the career is a refusal to be legible. He never built a house style you could market. Each film was an argument he wanted to have, made with whatever tools that particular argument demanded — and he never once repeated himself.
