My Take
What draws me to Melody is her refusal to be boxed in. A Honolulu-born Japanese-American who built a J-pop career from scratch, debuting in 2003, she walked away from music at her peak in 2008 to chase fashion design instead. I find that pivot admirable rather than puzzling. Most artists cling to the identity that made them famous; she treated singing as one chapter, not the whole book.
