My Take
Michael Hui is, to me, the architect of modern Hong Kong comedy. As the eldest of the four Hui brothers, he helped define what made audiences laugh through the 1970s and 80s, writing, directing and starring all at once. What I respect most is that intelligence underpinning the comedy, fitting for a Chinese University of Hong Kong graduate who could translate sharp wit into mass appeal. The fact that he won a Best Supporting Actor award in 2023, well into his eighties, says everything. Many comedians fade; Hui deepened. That is the kind of aging-into-mastery arc I find genuinely inspiring.
