My Take

Mike Mills is, to me, the secret engine of R.E.M. As a founding member and the bassist and backing vocalist, he was never the frontman, but those harmonies and melodic basslines are a huge part of why the band's records feel so warm. Born in 1958 and a University of Georgia man, he's a true multi-instrumentalist, handling keyboards and occasional lead vocals too. I always gravitate toward the player whose contribution you feel more than you notice. The fact that he co-founded one of the defining alternative rock bands and stayed central to its sound for decades earns my real respect for the long game.
