My Take
Pair skating in Japan has always been the road less traveled, and Miu Suzaki took it. Born in Nagoya in 1999 and schooled at Chukyo University Senior High, she competed with her former partner Ryuichi Kihara, winning the Japanese national title and representing Japan at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, taking two medals at the Asian Open Trophy, and appearing at the Four Continents Championships and on the Grand Prix series. Consider the arithmetic of that choice. Japan's women's singles field is famously deep, with a clear ladder and a proven pipeline. Pairs offers none of that security — you need a partner, a coach willing to specialize, and ice time in a discipline the domestic system was not built around. If your partnership ends, your career can end with it. Suzaki went that way anyway and reached the top of her country in it. Japanese pair skating has since gained real international standing, and she is part of the run-up to that.
