My Take
Nagisa Ōshima is, to me, one of cinema's great agitators. A Kyoto University intellectual and committed leftist, he used film as a scalpel against postwar Japanese complacency, and the results still unsettle. In the Realm of the Senses is reckless in the best sense, while Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence pairs beauty with deep ache. His haul, the Cannes Best Director prize, the Medal with Purple Ribbon, two Mainichi screenplay awards, confirms a mastery his provocations sometimes obscured. He divided audiences precisely because he refused to soothe them. I deeply admire artists who treat discomfort as a duty, and Ōshima did so to the end.
