My Take

Norman Fell is my kind of actor: the indispensable character man whose face you know instantly even if the name escapes you. Most famous as the landlord Mr. Roper, he also turned up in The Graduate, Bullitt, and Ocean's 11, never stealing the lead but always sharpening the scene. I have enormous respect for performers who serve the story rather than their egos. A Temple University graduate from Philadelphia, he built a career on reliability and dry comic timing. He passed in 1998, but that weary, knowing smirk remains perfectly preserved on film, and the screen is better for it.
