My Take

Roger Michell never got the auteur worship he deserved, and I think that was partly by design: his craft was invisible, always in service of actors and feeling. Notting Hill made him famous, but for me Persuasion and Venus show his real gift, a tenderness toward flawed, aging, awkward people that few directors can manage without sentimentality. Born in Pretoria, trained at Cambridge and in British theatre, he carried a stage director's trust in performance into every film. His death in 2021 left a quiet hole in middlebrow cinema, a category I use with affection. We need more directors who believe ordinary love stories deserve serious artistry.
