My Take
Roland Penrose deserves more recognition than the label artist alone conveys. Painter, poet, photographer and the man who arguably planted Surrealism on British soil, he was also a tireless collector and promoter who shaped how an entire country saw modern art. I find his wartime turn especially telling: applying his artistic eye to teach camouflage shows a mind that refused to keep creativity behind glass. His marriage to the legendary photographer Lee Miller only adds to the romance of the story. To me Penrose models the complete cultural life, one of making, gathering, championing and teaching with equal devotion.
