Ryō Katō

Ryō Katō started as a child actor and is still working as an adult — a sentence that sounds unremarkable until you consider how few child performers anywhere manage it. Born in Shizuoka in 1990, he graduated from Tama Art University's department of moving images and performing arts, which is the detail I find most telling. He is not someone coasting on early exposure; he went and studied the craft from the production side. The other thing worth naming is his relationship to his own distinctive appearance. In most industries, a strongly memorable face becomes a cage — you get one kind of role forever. He seems to have done the opposite, treating that recognizability as an asset rather than a limitation, which takes a particular kind of nerve. He is now in his mid-thirties, represented by Cube. For actors who began as children, this is usually the interesting stretch: old enough for weight, young enough to change direction. I am curious which way he goes.
