My Take

Sade Adu is my favorite argument against the attention economy. She emerged from Ibadan, conquered British pop with a voice that never raises itself, and then did the most radical thing a star can do: she went quiet. Years of silence between albums, no tabloid noise, no desperate reinvention — just immaculate records like By Your Side and Smooth Operator that sound outside of time. The Grammy and the royal honours feel almost beside the point; her real achievement is proving that restraint can be a form of power. Nobody has made minimalism feel this warm, and I trust her silence more than most artists' output.

Helen Folasade Adu (;Yoruba: Fọláṣadé Adú [fɔ̄láʃādé ādú]; born 16 January 1959), known professionally as Sade ( SHAH-day or shah-DAY) or Sade Adu, is a Nigerian-British singer-songwriter. She is the principal songwriter and lead vocalist of the band Sade. One of the most successful British female artists in history, she is often recognised as an influence on contemporary music.
