Saori Sakoda

Saori Sakoda played volleyball at a level where 175 cm is not tall. Born in 1987 in Kagoshima, she spent her career with Toray Arrows and represented Japan on the national women's team, winning Olympic bronze in London in 2012 and playing again in Rio in 2016 before retiring in 2017, and those facts carry more weight than they look like on paper. International volleyball is a sport that has been quietly getting taller for decades. Line a Japanese outside hitter up against opponents from Europe or Brazil and the height gap is immediately visible from the stands. Players who survive that gap do it with approach speed, timing, and a willingness to commit fully to a jump that leaves no margin for hesitation. Making the national team at all means being chosen out of an enormous domestic pool in a country where volleyball is genuinely popular and competition for a roster spot is brutal. Our file on her is short on individual honours, but the two lines it does contain — Toray Arrows, All-Japan — already describe a serious career.
