Shinji Yoshida

Shinji Yoshida is the kind of local-roots politician who actually did the long grind before going national — three terms on Shimonoseki city council, including a stint as vice-chairman, before winning a 2023 by-election and landing a seat in the House of Representatives. Born in Hohoku, the rural northern tip of Yamaguchi Prefecture, he went to Kansai University and then worked as a prefectural assembly secretary before cutting his own path in local politics. That slow climb through city council rather than parachuting in from a ministry is either admirable patience or a sign that national politics wasn't plan A — honestly, probably a bit of both. He's LDP through and through, representing a corner of Japan that has historically punched well above its weight in political heavyweights. Still relatively early in his national career as of 2024, so the real question is whether there's more to come.
