Shōdai Naoya

Shodai never looked like an ozeki to me, and that is exactly why he is interesting. His trademark was a slow, almost apologetic start at the initial charge, drifting backward until you assumed the bout was over, and then somehow the momentum stopped and he was the one pushing. Born in 1991 in Uto, Kumamoto, and a product of Tokyo University of Agriculture rather than a childhood in a stable, he arrived in professional sumo without the aura of a phenom. What he built instead was a record: two gold stars for beating a yokozuna, seven special prizes, a top-division championship in September 2020, and a climb to the rank of ozeki. Right-hand-inside was his home, and once he settled there his center of gravity turned into a problem nobody enjoyed solving. I have come to think stubbornness is an underrated athletic gift. Shodai rarely overwhelmed anyone. He just refused, patiently and unglamorously, to lose the way he was supposed to.
