My Take
Okay, I'll just say it: Stephen King basically raised me on dread, and I'm not mad about it. What gets me isn't the monsters, it's how he writes ordinary people, the small-town Maine clerks and grieving dads and bullied kids, so vividly that by the time the supernatural shows up I already care. Carrie, The Shining, It, Misery, The Stand. The guy is a machine, hundreds of stories deep, and yeah, some land harder than others, but his hit rate over decades is honestly absurd. I also love that he never got precious about it. He's the prolific, slightly cranky uncle of horror who'll tell you exactly what he thinks. I respect that almost as much as the scares.
