My Take
Pair skating in Japan is a small world. The country produces singles skaters in enormous numbers, but pairs has always been a thinner, harder path with fewer partners, fewer coaches and far less margin for error. That context is what makes Sumitada Moriguchi's résumé stand out to me. Born in Kyoto in 2001, educated at Kyoto Ryoyo High School and Doshisha University, he became a two-time Japanese national champion with his partner Yuna Nagaoka, took bronze at the 2025 Asian Winter Games and again at the 2026 Four Continents, and represented Japan at the 2026 Winter Olympics. What I find compelling is the sheer fragility of the discipline he chose. A singles skater who has a bad season loses a season. A pair skater who loses a partner loses the whole project and starts over from zero. Choosing that path in a country where the pipeline is narrow takes a particular kind of nerve. He is still in his twenties, and the interesting part of this story may not have happened yet.
