Takkyu Ishino

Takkyu Ishino essentially fast-forwarded Japanese dance music by himself. Born Fumitoshi Ishino in Shizuoka in 1967, he is best known as half of Denki Groove, but reducing him to that undersells the range: DJ, composer, record producer, and organizer of the events that gave techno an actual foothold in Japan. Most musicians make the music and stop there. He also built the room it gets played in, which is a fundamentally different kind of ambition. The part I find most appealing is the tension in how he presents himself. The production is meticulous, obsessive even, and the public persona is relentlessly unserious — no mystique, no attempt to look like a serious artist. Techno elsewhere often arrives wrapped in self-importance. In Japan, largely because of him, it arrived as something closer to a joke you were invited into, and that turned out to be a far more durable way in. Decades on, he is still at it.
