Terry Ito

Terry Ito, born Teruo Ito in Tsukiji, Tokyo in December 1949, spent his career on the side of television that viewers never see, and then walked around to the front of the camera and started talking. Director, producer, critic, writer, film director, television personality: the list of occupations attached to his name is unusually long, and unlike most such lists, none of the entries feel decorative. He ran Locomotion, a program production company, as its president. That background is the whole key to him, I think. When he offers an opinion on television, he is not a guest commentator guessing at how the machine works. He built the machine. There is a particular authority in criticism that comes from someone who has personally made the compromises being criticized, and he has never pretended otherwise. He is not a warm presence and makes no effort to be. Somehow that has never cost him. Getting away with saying exactly what you think, for fifty years, on Japanese television, is a skill in itself.
