Tim McIlrath

Tim McIlrath embodies, to me, the punk ideal of conviction over comfort. As the voice and co-founder of Rise Against, he channels anger into questions the rest of us would rather avoid. What I find genuinely compelling is the consistency between his art and his life: vegetarian, straight edge, no compromise. This is a guy who turned down the easy clichés of rock excess to live by his principles. Pairing a return to college in 2020 to finish his sociology degree with raw punk urgency, he writes lyrics that confront politics and injustice head-on. I admire artists who shout because they believe something, and McIlrath clearly does. That sincerity moves me.
