Toni Atkins

Toni Atkins commands my admiration for a rare achievement: leading both chambers of the California legislature, serving as Assembly Speaker and later President pro tempore of the Senate. Rising from a home without running water in Wythe County, Virginia, to the summit of one of the most powerful state governments in America speaks to extraordinary persistence. What I value is that her influence seems built on steady accumulation and trust rather than spectacle. She represents, to me, the kind of practical, durable politician who keeps the machinery of governance running without much fanfare, and that quiet competence deserves far more recognition than it usually gets.
