Tōru Yuri

I'll be honest, Tōru Yuri is one of those names that makes me grin before I even think about why. Born in 1921 up in Ishinomaki, Miyagi, he was a true son of the Shōwa-era comedy world, a guy who wore the actor, voice actor, and comedian hats but at his core was just a born clown who lived to make people laugh. What gets me about performers from that generation is how the funny stuff always carried a little ache underneath, a worn-in, hard-life sweetness that you can't fake. I imagine his gags landed sharper because of everything that came before them. He passed in 1999, and honestly, the whole shape of Japanese comedy owes something to broad-shouldered showmen like him. I never get tired of tipping my hat to that.
