Yasunobu Okugawa

Yasunobu Okugawa, born April 16, 2001, is a pitcher for the Tokyo Yakult Swallows. What strikes me about him is how early the label arrived. In Japan, a high-school pitcher with clean mechanics gets crowned as the next great arm before he has thrown a single professional inning, and the expectation runs ahead of the body carrying it. Okugawa has spent significant stretches away from the mound with injury, and each absence brings the same impatient chorus about promise unfulfilled. I find that chorus unfair. He is still in his mid-twenties. The years spent rebuilding an arm are not a gap in a career; they are part of it, and often the part that decides how long the career lasts. I would rather judge him by whether he comes back able to pitch for a decade than by whether he matched a teenage forecast. When that fastball is working, it is worth the wait.
