Yoshiko Kira

What I keep coming back to with Yoshiko Kira is the four years she spent at a printing company before running for office. She was born in Kochi to a prefectural assemblyman, graduated from Waseda in 2005, and could easily have gone straight into politics on family momentum. She didn't. She went and worked a normal job first, and I think that detour shows. There's a difference between someone who has only ever known campaign offices and someone who has drawn a paycheck under a manager. Then in 2013 she won a seat in the House of Councillors from the Tokyo at-large district for the Japanese Communist Party, which is not a soft landing by any measure. Tokyo is the most crowded, most expensive, most nationally scrutinized district in the country. Whatever a reader thinks of her party's platform, and that's genuinely not mine to argue here, winning your own name onto that Tokyo ballot line from a standing start is a real accomplishment.
