My Take

Yuja Wang is one of those rare musicians who makes you forget you're watching a technical feat and just pulls you straight into the music — which is saying something, because technically she's operating at a level that genuinely defies belief. Born in Beijing in 1987, she started piano at six, trained at the Central Conservatory of Music, and then landed at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, which is basically the NBA draft equivalent for classical pianists. By the time she was 21 she had already signed with Deutsche Grammophon. I've seen clips of her performing Prokofiev and Ravel and the sheer velocity, the cleanness of it, is almost unsettling — and yet the musicality is completely there. She's also become a cultural figure in her own right, unafraid to show up on stage with genuine personality, which classical music desperately needs more of.

She began learning piano at the age of six, and went on to study at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. By age 21, she was already an internationally recognized concert pianist and signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon.
