My Take
Honestly, Yukiya Arashiro is the kind of athlete who makes you do a double-take — a kid from Ishigaki Island, one of the most remote corners of Japan, who grew up under that blazing Okinawan sun and somehow ended up grinding up Alpine climbs at the Tour de France. He's not a big guy, 170cm in a sport where size matters a lot, but he was among the first Japanese riders to finish the Tour de France in 2009 and won the combativity award on Tour stages in 2012 and 2016, and that's not a small deal by any stretch. There's something quietly epic about his story that I think gets underappreciated because road cycling doesn't exactly dominate the Japanese sports conversation — but it should, at least for this guy. The image of someone from Okinawa's island world navigating European pelotons and cobblestones has this almost surreal, cinematic quality to it. He's the understated kind of champion I find myself rooting for every time.
