Zhang Jike

Zhang Jike commands a kind of awe I reserve for very few athletes. Winning men's singles gold at London 2012 to become only the fourth man ever to complete a career Grand Slam, joining names like Waldner and Liu Guoliang, would be enough on its own. That he reportedly did it faster than anyone before him speaks to a rare blend of talent and nerve under pressure. His 2013 Hall of Fame induction confirms it. I still remember the raw, ferocious energy of his game, and to me that wild competitive fire remains his enduring signature.
