My Take
Ben Johnson is my kind of Hollywood story. A real Oklahoma rancher's son and rodeo cowboy who showed up in town just to deliver horses for a movie and then never left, working as a wrangler and stuntman before John Ford pulled him into acting. That trajectory culminating in a 1972 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor is almost too poetic. I love that he was a genuine horseman who happened to become a fine actor, not the reverse. There is an unforced authenticity in performers who lived the thing before they played it, and Johnson radiated exactly that grounded, weathered truth on screen.
