Billy Long

Billy Long fascinates me as a study in American reinvention. A Missouri auctioneer who parlayed the rapid-fire patter of the sale ring into six terms in Congress and, briefly in 2025, the top job at the IRS. That arc is almost cinematic. I read his career as proof that retail charisma still moves voters, for better or worse. His tenure as commissioner lasted only months, but simply reaching that perch from a Springfield auction block is remarkable. Whatever one makes of his politics, the sheer breadth of his resume makes him one of the more unusual figures to pass through Washington.
