My Take
Billy Wilder is, for my money, the finest screenwriter Hollywood ever had. Few filmmakers could braid comedy, cynicism, and heartbreak into a single film the way he did across Sunset Boulevard, Some Like It Hot, and The Apartment. His own life reads like one of his scripts: born in Poland, educated in Vienna, fleeing the Nazis, then conquering Hollywood and collecting seven Oscars without ever losing his wit. What I love most is his economy, the way a single line of dialogue can expose human weakness and tenderness at once. For anyone serious about cinema, he is unavoidable.
