Buruma Konno

Buruma Konno works in a corner of Japanese comedy that almost never gets exported, which is exactly why I find her worth pointing at. She is a pin geinin, a solo stand-up comic, born in 1986 in Shizuoka, and she performs under a stage name that no Japanese audience can hear with a straight face. That is a bet on yourself: pick a name that already sounds like a punchline and you had better be funny every single time. Her signature form is nazokake, a traditional riddle-pun structure that sets up politely and then lands somewhere considerably less polite. Wordplay comedy is unforgiving work; the joke either clicks in a second or dies in silence. She finished runner-up at The W, Japan's women's comedy championship, in both 2024 and 2025, which says plenty about the craft.
