My Take

Every time I trace rock music back to its source, I end up at Chuck Berry. What fascinates me isn't just that he invented the vocabulary — the riffs, the duck walk, the car-and-girls storytelling — it's how complete the blueprint was from the start. "Johnny B. Goode" still sounds like an instruction manual for every guitarist who came after. I also admire the unglamorous pragmatism: this revolutionary ran a restaurant and watched his money. The Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and Hall of Fame induction were formalities; the real monument is that you cannot play rock and roll without quoting him, knowingly or not.
