Chuck Wepner

Chuck Wepner earned immortality not by winning but by refusing to fall. The 198 cm New Jersey heavyweight took Muhammad Ali into the fifteenth round in 1975, falling just nineteen seconds short of the final bell, and in doing so inspired Rocky. That's a staggering legacy for a man who lost the fight. What I love is the unglamorous truth he embodies: that getting up again can matter more than the scoreboard. Being the last man to face Sonny Liston only deepens the lore. His 2016 New Jersey Hall of Fame nod feels right. Sometimes the underdog writes the better story.
