My Take
Clark Gable earns the King of Hollywood title in my book, but what I admire most isn't the crown, it's how he wore it. Sixty-plus films across thirty-seven years, an Oscar by his mid-thirties, and a screen presence so commanding that the American Film Institute still ranks him among the greatest legends. Yet at the height of that fame he joined the war effort and came home with a Distinguished Flying Cross. That combination of matinee-idol glamour and genuine grit is something modern stardom rarely produces. When I watch his films, I'm seeing the template every leading man since has been measured against, usually unfavorably.
Overview
William Clark Gable (February 1, 1901 – November 16, 1960) was an American actor often referred to as the "King of Hollywood". He appeared in more than 60 motion pictures across a variety of genres during a 37-year career, three decades of which he spent as a leading man. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Gable as the seventh-greatest male screen legend of classical Hollywood cinema.
