My Take
Dennis Hopper embodies everything I love about the New Hollywood era: reckless, brilliant, and utterly incapable of playing it safe. Easy Rider alone would secure his legacy as the film that rewired American cinema, but his villain in Blue Velvet might be the most terrifying performance I have ever seen. I am also drawn to the fact that he won an MTV villain award and a Razzie in the same year; that contradiction is pure Hopper. Add his serious work as a photographer and you get an artist who treated every medium as a dare. Flawed, chaotic, and irreplaceable, and they simply do not make careers like his anymore.
