Dicky Eklund

What grips me about Dicky Eklund isn't the two New England welterweight titles, impressive as they are for a kid out of Lowell. It's the second act. After his own career faded, he became his half-brother Micky Ward's trainer, choosing to make someone else win. That shift from fighter to cornerman, immortalized in The Fighter, reads to me as a story about redemption and humility rather than boxing. I find the messy, fall-and-rise humanity of him far more compelling than any belt. He's the kind of figure you quietly root for.
