Elaine Chao

Elaine Chao's biography fascinates me regardless of where one lands on her politics. Arriving in America as a Taiwanese immigrant child who barely spoke English, then rising to lead two federal departments, is a genuinely remarkable arc of will and ambition. The White House Fellowship and the Mount Holyoke pedigree tell of relentless drive. What I respect most is the symbolic weight: she showed an immigrant daughter could reach the very center of American power. I don't have to share her views to find the climb extraordinary, and I read her career as proof of how far sheer determination can carry someone.
