My Take
Erislandy Lara is one of those fighters who never quite got the mainstream spotlight he deserved, and honestly that bothers me a little. Growing up in Guantánamo, Cuba — a place most Americans only know from one grim association — he came up through Cuba's legendary amateur system, defected, and then quietly built one of the most technically sophisticated careers in boxing. The guy held world titles at super welterweight and middleweight, spanning nearly a decade at the top level, and his slick southpaw style frustrated opponents and casual fans alike because it looks almost too controlled to be exciting. But that's the art of it. Winning the 2018 Ali-Frazier Award from the Boxing Writers Association tells you everything: his peers and the press knew exactly how good he was, even when the pay-per-view crowd didn't fully catch on.
