My Take

Federico García Lorca is one of those rare artists who managed to pour an entire culture's soul into his work — and I mean that literally. Born in Granada in 1898, he grew up soaked in Andalusian folk music, flamenco, and the deep melancholy the Spanish call duende, and you feel all of it thrumming through plays like Blood Wedding and Yerma. His poetry collection Poet in New York is unlike anything else from that era — raw, surrealist, electric, written after a stay in 1929–30 when the city clearly knocked him sideways in the best possible way. What gets me is how much he packed into just 38 years: theatre direction, lyric poetry, folk-song arrangement, avant-garde drama. The fact that Nationalist forces executed him at the start of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, before he could even see most of his work published, is one of modern literature's most devastating what-ifs.
