My Take
Hiroshi Nagai is the guy who basically bottled a perfect summer afternoon and turned it into a career. Born in 1947 in Tokushima, he came up through the Japanese graphic design and illustration world and by the city-pop era he'd become its unofficial visual poet — all blazing blue skies, impossibly clean swimming pools, and palm trees that somehow never cast a shadow. There's a precision underneath everything he makes, a designer's discipline, but it never feels stiff; it feels like you cracked a cold beer the moment you looked at it. What gets me is how he's been doing this for decades, well into his seventies, and the work still breathes. No nostalgia-bait griminess, no ironic distance — just sincere, sun-drenched joy executed at a very high level. The fact that his Instagram handle has "penguin" in it tells you everything you need to know about the man's personality.
