My Take

Joan Greenwood is one of those performers I rate more for texture than for filmography. That husky voice and slow, exacting diction made her instantly recognizable, and in Kind Hearts and Coronets she is pure sly mischief. What I admire is that she built a signature out of how she spoke, not just how she looked, which is rarer than it sounds. The fact that she was still appearing in Little Dorrit the very year she died, in 1987, tells me she never coasted. For me she embodies a particular brand of arch, witty English screen presence.
