Kenshiro Kawanishi

Three straight runner-up finishes at the M-1 Grand Prix is, I would argue, a heavier thing to carry than a single win. A victory closes the story; second place hands it back and tells you to try again next December. Kawanishi did that three years running with Wagyu, and the material never got looser or more desperate. It stayed intricate, tightly engineered, almost architectural. His own role in the act was the unglamorous half. Those elaborate premises only land because his straight-man work keeps the audience oriented, cutting in precisely where a confused viewer would want to object. Audiences remember punchlines; I remember who made them legible. He made difficult comedy look easy, which is the least rewarded skill in the trade.
