My Take

You cannot really tell the story of superhero cinema without Kirk Alyn. A New Jersey native and Columbia man, he was the first actor to play Superman in live action, in the 1948 serial and its 1950 sequel, long before the genre became a billion-dollar machine. There is something fitting about his later cameo as Lois Lane's father in the 1978 film, a graceful handoff to the myth he helped found. His 1974 Inkpot Award shows the fans never forgot him. Pioneers trade glamour for nerve, and I have only a quiet salute for this original man of steel.
