My Take

Laurie Metcalf is my favorite kind of actor: a theater-bred craftsperson who treats every medium with the same rigor. Four Primetime Emmys for Jackie on Roseanne would be a whole career for most people; for her it was almost a side project next to her Tony-winning stage work and that devastating Oscar-nominated mother in Lady Bird. What I appreciate is that she never coasts on persona — she builds each character from posture and breath upward, the Steppenwolf way. Over four decades she has made ordinary Midwestern women feel seismic. If you want a master class in acting without vanity, study Metcalf.
