My Take

Leslie Howard fascinates me as much for his ending as his roles. The gentle, faintly ineffectual Ashley Wilkes in Gone with the Wind belied a genuine polymath who acted, directed, produced, and wrote for the finest magazines of his day. One of the 1930s' biggest box-office idols, he won the Volpi Cup, then died at forty-nine when his plane was shot down during the war, a loss still wrapped in mystery. To me he reads almost like a tragic novel, an artist who seemed to step straight from the screen into history. I hold his memory in real esteem.
